Why is it so important to use a District Heating Provider that is compliant with the CRU regulations?

October 20, 2023

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has been appointed as regulator of District Heating and Cooling networks by S.I. 350 of 2022, which transposes Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources.

As part of its remit, the CRU will require all District Heating providers to register with the CRU and make certain information available to final consumers, pursuant to Regulation 33 of S.I. 350 of 2022.

What does this mean for property managers?

If you manage a property that is connected to a district heating network, you will need to ensure that the supplier of that network is registered with the CRU. You can check this by visiting the CRU website or by contacting your supplier directly.

Why is this important?

Registering with the CRU will help to ensure that district heating suppliers are meeting their obligations to consumers. This includes providing information on the energy performance and share of renewable energy used in the district heating system.

As part of its remit, the CRU now requires all District Heating suppliers to register with the CRU and make certain information available to final consumers, pursuant to Regulation 33 of S.I. 350 of 2022.

The importance of properly maintaining your district heating is not only about complying with the regulations.

  • Regular checks and maintenance enhances the performance and reduces running costs of the system.
  • When your district heating system is operating efficiently it uses less energy and carbon, and is therefore more sustainable, particularly when fuelled with renewables such as biomass.
  • Continuity of service: tenants can be secure in the knowledge that there will be no disruptions.
